Andrew Luxmoore, 35, I’ve been riding for around 15 years,
Until recently I’d never had any official lessons but had largely learnt on the go out hunting so had developed a style of my own which worked ok but was in need of some adjustments to enable me to progress. I have recently decided that I would like to do some more serious showjumping and possibly eventing, and to get to a standard where I might win some of the classes at 1.10m or above I definitely needed some pointers.
I really enjoy the coaching sessions with Cheski as she tells it to you straight which I appreciate without over complicating things and generally gives you only one or two simple things to try at a time which makes it easy to concentrate and make the adjustments without being overly complicated. She is never negative about your style rather focusing on the positive or trying to do it differently which is great for your confidence.
A typical session will involve a few questions about what you want to achieve from the time to start with and then a warm up where Cheski will observe and decide what needs to be done based on what she observes rather than deciding blind what is best for you which I appreciate.
Communication is always clear and no problem if like me you don’t understand some of the terminology it is only a matter of asking her to explain, which she does without judging you. Also as a session progresses the plan is always fluid enough to change to suit the moment as things can and often do become apparent where more work is required and this is important for me as nothing with horses is ever set in stone. The only slight issue I have is that I don’t think that for someone confident like myself that I am pushed hard enough sometimes, pressure and coping with it is important for both the horse and I, but so far I have had no reason not to trust Cheski’s judgement and I always come away from a session with something to work on, and feeling that I have enjoyed myself and achieved something.
I’m not sure what else could be done to improve things, but I keep coming back so…
