The Sporthorse Team

The team at Abderry comes from diverse backgrounds, but all with a common interest – We enjoy getting horses to work confidently in their jobs.

Our methods don't have a fancy title – we use non-aggressive, confidence building tactics in a positive learning environment developed from our combined 50+ years experience at Abderry.

At Abderry we are all horse-riders and enthusiasts and take pride in a job well done.

Cheski Brown
Owner / Manager of Abderry since 1984. I have ridden and been around horses all my life.  I am passionate about learning what makes horses tick.  I love seeing people and horses achieve.  To this end I thoroughly enjoy being able to think outside the square  ("What else can we do?") and get a huge buzz out of being able to look someone in the eye to say "Well Done" when someone has had the courage to persevere and attain their goals.

Relevant Qualifications: BHSII, ESNZ Performance SJ & Dressage Coach

Office Manger since 2004, I will most probably be your first point of contact.  Although I don't handle or work professionally with the horses I have had a very keen interest in them and in particular with thoroughbred breeding since I was little.  I am not a gung-ho rider or horse handler so I understand if you are unsure about being close up and personal with horses.  I enjoy my own horse and have bred and raised some nice thoroughbred horses

I'm in my 7th year at Abderry.  I love working with the supposedly ‘difficult, horses.  However they’re actually nervous, lacking in confidence and just needing a friend, to say "hey it’s ok, you can cope with this".  I love working with these types, as feeling and seeing them grow in confidence, small steps at a time is a huge buzz. I find that once they start taking those little first steps towards trusting you they often then make a huge leap forwards as if to say “I didn’t realise it was going to be so easy!” Read more

I've worked at Abderry since February 2008.  Originally from Malaysia I enjoy working with horses in their natural habitat and working with them from the beginning, it's like white clean cloth. I have to paint it to look good. Its the same for all the young horses I work with here. I have to understand them and get inside their brains to make them good because everyone wants a good horse. It is a new challenge for me since I left my hometown because in Malaysia the horses are already "made".  Read more

I started at Abderry in November 2006 after completing a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Equine Studies at Massey University. I was attracted to Abderry because of the variety of horses handled here.

I have been around horses most of my life – they were an essential part of the family farm, and used for stock work which is how I got involved.  Read more
